Rules of the River
Respect the river, enjoy the ride.
Land & Camping Guidelines
-
Respect Private Property: All land along the river is privately owned.
-
Camp Responsibly: Camp only when the land is not posted with “No Trespassing” signs. There are miles of open land and public campgrounds available for use.
-
Human Waste Disposal: Waste must be buried in 6 inches of soil. Do not bury waste in the sandy beaches. A small camp shovel works excellent for this.
Fire & Wood Policies
-
Fire Permits Required: You must obtain a permit for all campfires.
-
Fires on Sandbars Only: Keep all campfires restricted strictly to the sandbars.
-
Protect the Trees: Do not cut live trees. Only use down or dead wood for your campfires.
Waste & Gear Management
-
No Glass Allowed: Bring cans only. Glass containers are strictly prohibited on the river.
-
Pack It In, Pack It Out: All trash must be picked up and carried out. For your convenience, dumpsters are located at all pickup and takeout points.
-
Clear the Takeouts: Remove your canoe and gear promptly at all takeout points to keep the areas clear for others.
Behavior & Safety Expectations
-
Keep Noise Low: Keep noise levels to a minimum. Please be courteous and respect the rights of fellow river users.
-
Zero Tolerance Policy: Drunken and rowdy behavior is not tolerated on the river.
-
Drive Cautiously: Maintain a safe speed of 10 mph at all takeout and put-in areas.
-
Follow Official Guidance: Please follow all directions provided by the Saco River Recreation Council staff, also known as the “River Runners.”
